Creative Writing Workshop for Teens at BAMPFA
May 4th &11th, 2020
Affordable Housing for Trans Elders by Edie Fake @ BAMPFA
A creative writing workshop for teens exploring the spaces where we can be our true selves.
This two-session workshop is inspired by the mural, Affordable Housing for Trans Elders, by Edie Fake, on view at the UC Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) this spring. Drawing on vernacular building styles, gay and trans flag designs, and decorative patterning, Fake's mural envisions and celebrates the potential of queer space while underlining an urgent social need. The artist will join us for the May 11th session.
Themes will be evoked and prompts given, but writers will always be encouraged to trust their own creativity and write however they are inspired.
Writers of all genres and experience levels, ages 14 to 18, are welcome.

NB:)We are working on moving this workshop to a virtual space. (Though we’d be happy if we could still meet at the museum!)
Karen Bennett (The Sharon & Barclay Simpson Associate Curator for Education, School and Family Programs at BAMPFA) and Peggy Simmons (Green Windows Founding Director and Lead Facilitator) are working on ways this workshop can still offer thorough access to Edit Fake’s mural Affordable Housing for Trans Elders, including its historical, cultural and stylistic contexts, even if we are not in front of the mural or in the museum itself. Edie Fake will still join us for one of the two sessions.
